Syllabus
Your Selections: The Okanagan Concert Band festival strives to provide a festival that is educationally meaningful to both directors and students. To that end, please keep in mind that the adjudicators are expecting that the traditions and protocols of concert band be respected. Stage manners (clinic included) will influence each group’s outcome. Directors, please note that music selection is critical. Pop music is inappropriate. This is the time to show off your band. Please choose three pieces to perform for the festival. To be considered for a MusicFest Canada invitation bands could perform a piece from the MusicFest Canada Syllabus list as well as a march. Directors are reminded that if they have received an invitation from last year, they must attend a MusicFest sponsored festival this year to be eligible to attend MusicFest.
Each Director MUST provide the adjudicators with two (2) CONDUCTOR’S SCORES of each selection that is to be played, so as to ensure that each adjudicator will be able to provide a detailed and informed adjudication. It is recommended that the bars be numbered.
Schedule: Beginning with the warm-up room, each segment of the performance process takes 30 minutes. Bands should have their instruments prepared and be waiting outside the warm-up room so that they can enter as soon as the room has been vacated. The time given on the schedule is the time that your band will be on stage. Please be ready for your warm-up 30 minutes prior to your performance time.
Facility: Have your band dropped off in front of the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. Inside you will find the registration table where you can hand in your scores, a copy of the list of your selections, a seating plan, and an introduction for the Master of Ceremonies to read. Tickets for the Tuesday Evening Concert may be picked up at the registration desk as well. Please encourage your students to keep the facility tidy. Use the waste bins for all garbage. Thanks
Instrument Storage Room: There is a place for your band to leave cases and coats and bags. The room is monitored. Please do not play in this area.
Warm-Up Room: Here you will have a basic percussion section, chairs and stands. The warm-up room will be available for a maximum of 30 minutes prior to performance. Your ensemble will be expected to leave the warm up room up to 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time in order to arrive at the stage on time, leaving approximately 20 minutes for warm up. All Ensembles should report to the warm up check in area in sufficient time to put equipment and cases in the assigned storage area.
The Stage: The Cleland Theatre will be set up for your band to play according to the seating plan you offer. Before you begin to play, the Master of Ceremonies will introduce you and the adjudicators will give you the nod to indicate that they are ready. Waiting between each selection will give the adjudicators an opportunity to complete their comments and make your experience even better. Performance is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes, which will include set up, introduction of the Ensemble and exit from the stage. An Ensemble that exceeds this time will be suspended. Ensembles performing senior level music are advised to program carefully with this in mind.
Adjudication: Each Ensemble will receive a clinic with a Festival Adjudicator focusing on observations made during the on-stage performance. Performances will be heard be two adjudicators, one of whom will follow you to the adjudication room where he will work with your band to demonstrate points of improvement. Ensembles will be evaluated to a “National Standard of Performance” unless they have requested “Adjudication Only” prior to the performance.
Musical integrity will be the basis of evaluation. Adjudicator’s comments will include stylistic interpretation, intonation, dynamics, attacks, releases, articulation, blend, balance, repertoire, and instrumentation.
Adjudicator’s comments will reflect a total assessment of the performance selections. Written and taped evaluation will be available following the performance. Adjudicator’s comments will be intended as a guide for the continued development of the ensemble.
In an attempt to emphasize the non-competitive nature of the festival, we will be using an adjudication matrix that allows the adjudicators to offer an analysis of each performance. This working document will provide useful feedback about each band’s development.
Photo Room: Digital photographs are included in the registration cost. Photographs will be provided in a Google Drive link and then the directors can chose to share the pictures with their bands either digitally or by having them printed at their local retail store. Both a serious and a funny photograph of the band will be taken and students will also have the opportunity to be photographed alone or with their friends.
Instrument Storage Room: After the cycle of rooms is completed, students may put their instruments away. If necessary, your belongings may be left in the storage room for the duration of the festival day. This way your students can go listen to other bands perform in the theatre without having to worry about hauling horns around.
Recordings: Each Ensemble Director will Google Drive link with 2 recordings of their performance. There will be two versions of each piece: one with the adjudicator comments and one that has only the band.
Equipment: Ensembles must bring all instruments and equipment other that that specifically provided by the Festival as follows:
Festival Performance Area: 4 timpani, xylophone, orchestral bells, 1 concert snare drum, bass amp for up to 4 basses, bass drum, drum set, tubular chimes, chairs, stands.
